As World Food Day is observed all over the world, Akwa Ibom State Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture & Natural Resources set aside a day like this to showcase the rich harvest of Agricultural produces from the state.
As in the case every year, the World Food Day was held on October 16th, with the main goal being to raise public awareness about hunger challenges and encourage people worldwide to take action in the fight against hunger.
The theme for 2015 is “Social protection and Agriculture”, which aims to underline the role social protection plays in reducing chronic food insecurity and poverty by ensuring direct access to food or the means to buy food. Social protection is, moreover, a viable alternative for stimulating agricultural production and local economic activity.
Agriculture is one of the most critical sectors of the economy. Government has the statutory responsibility of providing the needed enabling environment to ensure availability of adequate and affordable food, food security, and supply of agro-based raw materials for industry, generation of employment, creation of wealth and economic emancipation of the people. In Akwa Ibom state, the day was marked in style, as farmers from across the state showcased the best of their produce.
Governor Udom Emmanuel reaffirmed his administration’s drive to formulate policies that will thrust on Agriculture to cause a quantifiable annual growth in the production of cash crops, staple food, livestock and fish through institutional and infrastructural support for private, small, medium and large scale farmers.
Speaking through his representative- The Honourable Commissioner for Lands and Town Planning- Prince Uwem Ita Etuk, he assured the Ministry of Agriculture of adequate support to further compliment the efforts of the state government in rural areas.
The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Agriculture & Natural Resources- Dr. Matthew Nathan Ekaette while speaking at the occasion announced that the Ministry will soon launch a website to further promote sales of made in Akwa Ibom Agro Produce to the world. Also present at the event were The Honourable Commissioner of Environment- Dr. Iniobong Essien, and other top government officials.
The event had on exhibition Agro Produces from all the 31 Local Government Areas of the state.
