…AKHA Press Centre in the Pipeline

Members of the sixth Assembly of the Akwa Ibom State Legislature got a pat on the back today(October 2, 2015), as the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Elder Aniekan Uko commended them for their total support with no threat of impeachment against him.

Addressing the Assembly Press Corp during his maiden interactive session with them, Speaker Uko ascribed the stability of the House Leadership tp the unity prevailing in the House, arguing that, it is a clear proof that he has carried all his colleagues along in an open and robust way in running the affairs of the House.

He disclosed that plans are in advanced stage to establish a functional modern and well equipped Press Centre in the Assembly complex to aid the work of the Press Corp and pledged to ensure training on Legislative reporting and better welfare for the members of the Press corp soon. The Speaker explained that, the ongoing renovations of his Office and Executive Chambers, as well as other projects in the Complex will soon be completed as that the proposed Press Centre will be implemented.

On the status of the Press as the fourth Estate of the realm, Elder Uko harped that, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly under his watch cannot afford to sideline or bypass the Press, who he said are partners in progress and perform the very vital role of interpreting and projecting the House and its activities to the public. He however decried some occasional unfounded reports against the sixth Assembly most of which were baseless and appealed to newsmen to excercise high level of responsibility and integrity in their practice, always ensure that their news items reflect constructive criticism, truth and fair reportage

The speaker promised that members of the sixth Assembly will sustain the press friendly atmosphere already prevalent and commended Governor Udom Emmanuel for demonstrating so early, focused and result-oriented leadership in the State. Describing Governor Udom as a good man, the Speaker maintained that, the House is poised to work in tandem with the Executive to move the State to the next level.
Also in attendance at the briefing with The Speaker was the member representing Onna State Constituency and Chief Whip of the House Hon. Otuekong Nse Essien, both of who led the Assembly Press Corp to an inspection tour of ongoing projects in the Assembly complex.
